9 tricks for those who can't sleep on the plane

Do you panic about flying or just don’t like it and it keeps you from sleeping when you want to fall asleep the most? Pay attention to these nine tricks that will make you rest easier.

1. Take night flights

Whenever possible, take flights at night, it will be easier to fall asleep. If it coincides with your normal sleep schedule, you will be able to sleep more easily. Another advice is that the night before the trip you sleep a little less, get up 2 or 3 hours earlier than normal to feel sleepy.

2. Tuesdays and Wednesdays you travel more comfortably

If you have the opportunity to choose the day you are going to fly, have no doubts, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the most convenient days to travel. There are generally far fewer people on the plane, so you’ll have more free space.

Just the opposite happens on Fridays and holidays, when many people travel. Take this into consideration.

3. The best seat is the window seat

If you are one of those people who likes the aisle, you will have to change your preference because the best seat is near the window. Choosing window-side seats allows you to lean your head to the side without disturbing people.

It is also recommended to avoid the seats closest to the divider that separates the crew area. Although they have plenty of leg room, these seats are reserved for families with babies.

You also won’t be able to sleep well if you choose seats near the restroom because it’s a busy area.

4. Tilt your seat as far as possible

As far as possible, tilt your seat as far as possible. Make sure the passenger behind you will not be disturbed.

Keep in mind that sitting for several hours straight on a low seat that has a 90-degree angle can cause waist pain.

Don’t unlock the table or lean against the seat in front of you because it’s bad for both your neck and spine.

5. Bring comfortable clothes

It is essential to travel with comfortable clothing. If you wear clothing that limits movement, you won’t sleep well, nor will you be able to sleep.

Also, take into account the temperature of the plane, check if the airline offers a blanket, take with you a coat and warm wool socks or even a thin blanket designed precisely for this type of travel.

If you get cold it will be difficult to sleep.

6. Fasten the seat belt securely

To sleep well you need to be as comfortable as possible, as we’ve mentioned, and if you put your seatbelt on over your clothes or blanket, you’ll achieve that.

If you buckle up and sleep, even if the plane gets into turmoil, the flight attendant doesn’t need to wake you up, the turbulence will go unnoticed.

7. Think about bringing sleeping accessories

It may be more convenient to fall asleep if you bring proper sleeping accessories. Keep in mind that what’s most annoying on an airplane is light and noise. Consider bringing a mask and ear plugs.

In order to have a comfortable position on the head or neck, you will need a special pillow. As an emergency measure you can wear a rolled-up shirt.

8. Turn off electronic devices

You must not use your cell phone on the plane

Turn off electronic devices whenever possible. Don’t be watching movies because the light from the screen keeps your brain active and this makes it take you longer to fall asleep. If you want to be entertained, better read a little.

9. Be careful what you eat and drink

Be careful what you eat and drink on board an airplane. If you want to sleep well, you shouldn’t overeat. In the case of drinks, it is better to avoid energy options or coffee and opt for other options such as water or tea without thein.
